This 1840 1d Black from Plate IV, lettered F-B, is tied to an envelope from Settle to London by a superb strike of the distinctive ‘SETTLE’ Maltese Cross in red. The cover was redirected to Essex, bearing a red ‘PAID’ tombstone cancel alongside the adhesive and a ‘1py P Paid’ hand-stamp on the front. Accompanied by a David Brandon Certificate, it is extremely rare, with just four examples of this Maltese Cross recorded on the 1d Black.
