This 1840 1d Intense Black from Plate 1b, a very fine used large-margined pair lettered S-G and S-H, remains on its original entire posted on 25th August 1840 from Liverpool to Kirkcudbright. The stamps display bright colour and are tied by three strikes of the red Maltese Cross, applied quite contrary to postal regulations. A most attractive early use of the world’s first adhesive postage stamp.
