Turks Islands 1881 ‘½’ On 1d Dull Red Block ERROR Double Surcharge

Turks Islands SG15b

£6,500.00

1 in stock

The only recorded instance of a double surcharge on this stamp, and the very piece upon which the catalogue listing rests.

This block of six (two by three) of the 1881 ‘½’ on 1d Dull Red, Type 7 surcharge from Setting 8, carries two impressions of the setting. The left-hand vertical strip displays a perfect double surcharge on the top stamp, a coincident double surcharge on the second, and a weak single surcharge at the foot, the probable consequence of the bottom stamp being missed at the first operation of the hand press. In very fine mint, lightly hinged condition with bright colour, it stands as a unique and remarkable multiple, the sole recorded example of the variety and the foundation of the catalogue listing.
